EssilorLuxottica, a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of eyewear, rakes in over $25B annually.

The cybersecurity challenge the company faces stems from operating in over 150 countries, with a 2L+ employee base.

With the growth in the digital economy, digital crime has grown proportionately. Juliana Chua, Sr. Director, Digital Tech (Global) at EssilorLuxottica, ranked the top concerns: IoT security, security operations management and cloud security.

A lot of companies are already paying a lot of attention to cybersecurity. However, there’s a very big gap as well – she pointed out that there’s a vendor market of $150B which has already been invested, but the real addressable market is around $2T.

“As the business becomes increasingly heavy on technology and the digital economy, we expect CISOs to talk to us as a business leader and see how we can deliver key business objectives together,” she said, during a keynote address at the ETCISO Secufest 2024 .

Chua said that although security can come down a little “harshly,” she underlined that cybersecurity and business must come together to work towards a technology action plan.

In the last five years, driving digital transformation has been the top priority. “What we really want from collaboration with CISOs is to figure out how we can control the costs. All the security solutions you are trying to bring across and all the problems we are trying to solve have to result in a business benefit for us,” she said.

Must-do for CISOs

There is a trust gap in the organization – between the board, the C-suite, the security teams, and the vendors. Chua’s mantra to overcome this problem is to recognize the human aspect.

Additionally, she advised that CISOs must evaluate three critical areas – establish the maturity levels, list best practices, and emerging trends.

“The second most important task is to consolidate all security activities with integrated relationships,” she said.

“We look towards CISOs to bring to us a unified interface that we are able to understand and build the trust level,” she added.

Additionally, Chua said that at EssilorLuxottica, a cyber risk quantification process has been adopted. This also gives the organization a clearer picture of what to prioritize.

In closing, Chua said: “The aim is to overcome key challenges between business and security. Technology alone cannot keep cyber attackers at bay – you need to recognize the human aspect and take steps to close trust gaps with more transparency.”
